- <p> He isn't looking for sympathy, just understanding. So said
- Pete Rose last week as he ended five months in an Illinois
- prison for tax cheating and checked into a Cincinnati halfway
- house. For the next three months, Rose, who could still be
- barred from baseball's Hall of Fame, will share a room and bath
- and sleep on a metal-spring bed. He's starting his 1,000 hours
- of community service by helping teach phys ed to local kids.
- They couldn't be happier: about a dozen of them surrounded Rose
- as he entered his new home and chanted, "Welcome home, Pete."
